Poems in the Manner of Wallace Stevens
THE COFFEE CUP
One’s self should be prepared
For all temperatures, both
Hot and cold, liquid and solids.
To be fragile enough to shatter
Upon the wish of its master
Yet strong enough to not crack under pressure
And to listen well
Of the delicacy of conversations
Among friends and lovers
And speak loudly
With written words or photos
For the quiet natured
Do not be afraid of the kiln fires
For it is one’s beginning
As well as one’s rebirth.
